    • 1). Learn the pieces and functions of your hydroponic garden, using the instruction manual and diagram. Find the growing pods and water tray and familiarize yourself with the water circulation system. Gauge the size of the hydroponic system and note any recommendations in regard to plants for the garden; while larger systems can support large plants like peppers and tomatoes, smaller systems do better with small plants like strawberries and mushrooms.

    • 2). Choose plants that thrive in controlled growing situations. This includes almost all vegetables, mushrooms, strawberries and all herb plants. It may also include any small flower. Growing plants that do well in hydroponic gardens will increase your success. Use plant seedlings or mushroom cultures for quick growth.

    • 3). Fill growing pots with peat moss to support the plants. Hydroponic gardens don't use soil and depend on water and nutrient solution to nourish the plants. Plant the seedlings in the peat moss, deeply enough that their roots are completely covered. Put the garden in a bright location where it will get six hours of natural or artificial light every day.

    • 4). Mix pure water with hydroponic growing solution, per the directions on the label, to provide vitamins and minerals to the plants. Use all-around nutrient solution or purchase one specific to the plants you're growing. Pour your mixture into the water tray and turn the garden on to start circulating water. Always monitor the water level and replenish this solution as needed.
