Raising a child is always a challenge, albeit a challenge which comes with multiple long- and short-term rewards too numerous to be counted. Being a good parent is an ongoing pursuit, and today's fast-paced world adds complexity to the job which our grandparents never had to deal with.

For instance, there are the technology issues, especially with young children and pre-teens. Should you let them have social networking access such as that available on facebook, or even messenger applications such as msn? How do you ensure they are safe when using a computer, if you decide to let them? Are there things you should be watching for, and are there things you should be teaching them? What about cell phones? Even if 'all their friends' have them, is it appropriate for your child to have a cell phone? Is it possible to go too far in trying to protect your child?

There are numerous issues to be dealt with, and the pre-teen years often present a challenge parents are unprepared for. Kids at this age begin listening to their friends' advice, and also begin showing more headstrong behavior as they navigate the long path towards independence. It is your duty as a parent, however, not only to protect and inform your kids but also to prepare them to make wise decisions on their own.

One thing is certain; there must be family rules and there must be open communication. As parents, you must discuss the issues and be clear about what you will and will not allow and why. Think deeply about the issues and inform your preteen regularly - without nagging - what will happen and why. Your family values and concerns can be shared in a loving and calm manner, and with consistency your child will get the message. They may not always agree with you, but comsider how many storeis you've heard about people who are grateful to their Moms for the guidance provided, even though they didn't appreciate it at the time.
