How to Make Dummy Curtain Panels
- 1). Take measurements from the top of the installed drapery rod all the way to 1 inch from the floor to determine the overall height of the panel. Add on 7 inches to your total height measurement to account for a double 1-inch hem on the top and bottom of the panel, and another 3 inches to accommodate a 3-inch pocket for the rod. For example, if your initial measurements are 96 inches, you'll need to add on 4 inches for the hem and 6 inches for the rod, meaning each panel should be 103 inches tall.
- 2). Determine how much of the window you want to cover with the panels. Most dummy panels are between 6 to 8 inches across, when gathered together. Multiply your desired width by 2 for gentle folds or 4 for many folds and a fuller look. Add on 4 inches for a double 1-inch hem on the right and left side of the fabric. For example, if you want your window panels to be 6 inches across and have many folds, you'll need 18 inches of fabric width.
- 3). Cut the fabric to the length you've measured for each panel.
- 4). Pin a 1-inch hem around all four sides of each panel piece, and sew it closed with the sewing machine.
- 5). Pin an additional inch around all four sides of each panel piece to finish the hem.
- 6). Fold down the top of the panel three inches and pin it into place. Sew the pocket closed with the sewing machine.
- 7). Slide the completed drapery panel on the curtain rod and position it to the outside edge of the window.
