Middle Tennessee Flowering Trees or Shrubs
- Some types of flowering trees in middle Tennessee are flowering dogwood (Cornus florida L.) and buckeye (Aesculus L.). Flowering dogwoods grow 15 to 25 feet in height, and buckeyes have white or pink showy flowers. Flowering shrubs in this region include the Carolina azalea (Rhododendron carolinianum Rehder) and hydrangeas (Hydrangea L.). Carolina azaleas are perennial shrubs, and hydrangeas grow 3 to 10 feet tall.
- The United States Department of Agriculture indicates on its plant hardiness zone map that middle Tennessee falls under USDA zones 6 and 7. Zone 6 has a minimum average annual temperature of minus 10 to zero degrees Fahrenheit and zone 7 minimum temperature range is zero to 10 degrees Fahrenheit. Some flowering trees and shrubs benefit from winter protection such as mulching and pruning; pruning also encourages new growth and flowers.
- Flowering trees have an ornamental value for landscaping on public and private lots. Flowering shrubs make aesthetically pleasing privacy screens and borders for walkways.
