    • 1). Draw the base design for the painting in pencil onto the clayboard.

    • 2). Coat the background of the painting in one solid color, or use a mixture of colors. Blend the colors directly on the clayboard for a watercolor-like effect. Allow the base layer to dry.

    • 3). Fill in the main images of the painting, working from the back of the scene to the front. Use the same color mixing and brush strokes that you would for applying oil or acrylic paints.

    • 5). Add details to the painting last of all to complete the painting. If the paint starts to dry before you're finished blending colors, spray the paint with a thin coating of water. Mix the paint as desired, using the water sprayed onto the board.

    • 6). Allow the painting to dry for 24 to 48 hours.

    • 7). Apply a coating of clear varnish over the entire painting to protect the surface and prevent the paint from fading or cracking. The clear varnish will also prevent the paint from melting in moist conditions.
