How to Remove the Recycle Bin From a Windows XP Desktop

    Using the Group Policy Editor

    • 1). Click the Windows "Start" button and click "Run." Type "gpedit.msc" (without quotes) and press "Enter" to launch the Group Policy Editor dialog box.

    • 2). Select "User Configuration," then "Administrative Templates." Click the "Desktop" option.

    • 3). Locate "Remove Recycle Bin icon on the desktop" in the right pane and double-click it. Click "Enable." Save the changes and close the Group Policy Editor dialog box. The Recycle Bin is no longer on the desktop.

    Using the Folder Options Dialog Box

    • 1). Launch Windows "Explorer" by double-clicking "My Computer" on the desktop. Click the "Tools" menu on the top and click "Folder Options" to launch the Folder Options dialog box.

    • 2). Click the "View" tab. You should see the "Advanced Settings" box. Scroll down the box and uncheck "Show Recycle Bin Icon on the Desktop."

    • 3). Click "Apply" to save the changes and click "OK" to close the Folder Options dialog box. The Recycle Bin is no longer on the desktop.
