Hotpoint Refrigerator Troubleshooting

    Adjust the Settings

    • Check the temperature settings on the interior of your Hotpoint refrigerator, if it is not cooling properly. Turn the temperature down to its coldest setting and wait at least an hour to see if the inside of the refrigerator cools down. If it does eventually cool down after this adjustment, the thermostat may need to be calibrated or replaced.

    Test the Power

    • Next, open the door to see if the interior light turns on. If the light is not on, this may be an indication that the refrigerator is not receiving power. Check the light bulb first to make sure it has not simply burnt out. Inspect the electrical cord to make sure it is plugged in and not damaged. Next, check the home's electrical panel to see if the circuit breaker has tripped or there is a blown fuse. If you still cannot find a problem, plug another appliance into the same outlet to make sure the outlet is getting power.

    Clean the Coils

    • If the light is turning on, but the refrigerator is still not cooling, listen for the sound of the compressor. If you hear the compressor running, the problem may be a dirty condenser coil. These coils on the back of the refrigerator can easily become clogged with dust and debris. Use a stiff brush or vacuum attachment to clean off the coils. Make sure there is at least a few inches between the coil and the walls or cabinets surrounding the refrigerator so there is adequate air flow.

    Check for Leaks

    • Pools of water inside the refrigerator are often a result of a clogged drain tube. If your Hotpoint refrigerator has an icemaker, be sure the bottom of the refrigerator is level so water does not leak down through the unit. If you see water on the outside of the refrigerator, check the drain pan to make sure it is not backed up or cracked. Inspect the water hose for the icemaker, if applicable to your refrigerator. Pay close attention to the connection between the hose and the water inlet valve. Replace the hose if there are leaks coming from this area.
