Tip number one...
SUGAR IS NOT YOUR FRIEND.
Most people realize sugar is bad for you but don't realize what foods, other than sweets, contain a lot of sugar.
For years we have been told to eat whole wheat bread and pasta.
The problem is although those products do contain some fiber they are still heavy in carbohydrates.
No matter where the carbohydrate comes from our bodies turn it into glucose (sugar) in our blood.
If the insulin in our system can not keep up with the level of sugar in our blood and deliver it to the cells to be used as energy it becomes stored energy.
Stored energy equals fat! You do not have to eliminate carbohydrates from your diet but most people need to greatly reduce their consumption.
The carbohydrates you do take in should come from fruits and vegetables.
Fruits and vegetables do contain sugar (called fructose) but also tend to be higher in fiber which assists your body in the digestion process.
Tip number two..
...
FAT DOES NOT MAKE YOU FAT.
What a crazy notion, huh? Yet another tale we have been told for years that if you lower you fat consumption you can lose weight faster and reduce your risks of heart disease.
Unfortunately the U.
S.
has reduced our fat consumption and the epidemics of obesity, heart disease, and diabetes have actually increased.
Our bodies have an almost unlimited storage for fat (the kind you eat).
Believe it our not fat is crucial for several functions in our bodies.
Fat is a must for our brains to function properly.
Tip number three...
PROTEIN IS YOUR FRIEND.
Muscles are built from amino acids.
Amino acids are found in protein.
The great news is protein can be found from a variety of sources.
Meat, fish, and poultry have the highest amounts of protein but you can also find it in plant life as well.
The best way to determine how much protein to consume is to find out your lean body mass.
Once you have that number you should consume that amount of protein in grams.
Example: Someone has a lean body mass of 125 pounds should eat 125 grams of protein.
The higher your lean body mass the more fat you can burn so try and eat some protein with every meal.
Follow those three simple tips and you can be shedding those holiday pounds and looking great for the summer in no time.
