    • 1). Clean out the filter sand when the pressure reading reads 8 to 10 pounds higher than normal. Turn the water pump and filter off. Move the filtration setting from “filter” to “backwash.”

    • 2). Turn the filter back on. Backwash the filter for 3 minutes. Continue to backwash until the filter sand appears clean in the filter sight window.

    • 3). Turn off the filter. Change the filtration setting from “backwash” to “rinse.” Turn the filter back on. Rinse the filter for 30 seconds.

    • 4). Turn off the filter. Move the filtration setting back to “backwash.” Repeat the backwashing and rinsing cycles 2 more times. Turn the filter system off.

    • 5). Wash the sand if the sand appears clogged or if the sand has mud balls created by an excess of calcium inside the pool. Sand washing is usually something that has to be done every 2 to 3 years.

    • 6). Remove the top cover from the filter. Some models use screws to hold the top in place, while others use bolts. Use a screwdriver or ratchet depending on the kind of connection your filter system has.

    • 7). Pour a bottle of sand filter cleaner inside the sand. Distribute the liquid evenly around the sand. Move the filter setting to the “rinse” setting and turn the filter on. Rinse the filter for 1 minute. Turn the filter back off.

    • 8). Move the filtration setting back to “filter.” Turn the filter and pump back on. Filter the pool as normal.
