How to Replace a Keypad on an HP 8300 Laptop
- 1). Shut down the Pavilion dv8300 and remove the charging cable and all external hardware. Turn the computer over, and remove the battery.
- 2). Remove the long protective cover next to the Pavilion dv8300 battery compartment by unscrewing the Phillips-head screws fully and inserting a fingernail into the seam at the edge of the panel. This panel covers the memory modules and wireless card, which you do not need to modify.
- 3). Unscrew the five Phillips-head screws running along the back edge of the Pavilion dv8300. Three of the screws are inside the empty battery compartment.
- 4). Unscrew the two Phillips-head screws in the middle of the Pavilion dv8300. One screw is inside the compartment for the RAM and wireless card, and the other is the final screw remaining in the battery compartment. Turn the dv8300 over and open the screen fully.
- 5). Pry the plastic strip containing the power button away from the Pavilion dv8300 gently, using a flat-head screwdriver. You might find it easiest to do this by prying the caps away from the screen hinges first and then working toward the bottom of the strip. After lifting the strip enough that you can fit a finger under it, finish removing it with your hands. You may feel a few snaps while doing this.
- 6). Lift the back of the Pavilion dv8300 keyboard and rotate the entire assembly forward and down until you can reach the cable connecting it to the motherboard. Flip the keyboard cable lock open with your fingernail and slide the cable out of the connector. Remove the keyboard assembly and place it upside-down on your work surface.
- 7). Unscrew the five Phillips-head screws holding the Pavilion dv8300 keyboard to the assembly frame. Remove the keyboard, place the new one in the frame and replace the screws.
- 8). Place the finished Pavilion dv8300 keyboard assembly upside-down on top of the palm rest. Thread the ribbon cable into the motherboard connector and close the lock. Rotate the keyboard down into the cavity in the computer.
- 9). Push the plastic power button strip back to its original position above the keyboard and over the screen hinges. Close the screen and turn over the Pavilion dv8300.

Replace all of the Phillips-head screws that you removed, along with the one for the plastic RAM and wireless card cover. Remember to replace the screw inside this compartment before covering it.
