How to Write Engagement Announcements

    • 1). Once you reach the point where you and your fiancé are ready to share the news with the general public, there are standard pieces of information you want to collect and verify. The newspaper link I provided below and the free Microsoft form both give you some general ideas about the information you should be prepared to provide.

    • 2). I will add a caution. Some mediums allow you to add more personal information than others when sending in your announcement. Privacy is a concern for some people more than others. Consider how much of your private information you wish to have published not just in the newspaper but likely on-line as well.

    • 3). Decide where you want to post your engagement announcement. Some couples choose a central newspaper. Others choose to announce where they currently live and in their home town. Recently others are using other forms of media to send out the announcements. You will need to determine what best suits your wedding plans and budget.

    • 4). Most engagement announcements do include the names of the couple and the names of the parents. If you have any family issues, there are plenty of samples to read and decide how best to handle your situation. This is your announcement so follow the pattern that best fits your situation. Do not worry about what other people think. Many announcements also include the towns of the couple, and some those of the parents. Most assume the bride's parents are announcing, but the newspaper version template I downloaded actually asked specifically for the person or persons announcing, it made no assumptions about who would have that role. Some couples choose not to include that section.

    • 5). One of the most important details to include is the wedding date if one has been set. If you have decided, the location is also wonderful to add if these plans are made. While it can create some awkward situations as people make assumptions about being invited, it can also serve as a warning to others to start reserving the date. This can be helpful to guests who will need to consider travel plans should the venue either not be local, or not local to them.

    • 6). Many forms do include areas for additional information including education and current or future employment. I consider these to be highly optional. Some people see them as great marketing and promotion tools. I am not comfortable with publishing too much personal information in print. You just never know who is accessing your information. Again this is a personal choice to discuss with your fiancé.

    • 7). Many couples choose to include and engagement photo with their announcement. This is a great chance to get a professional photo taken with you and your fiancé that meets the submission guidelines or you can take one of your own to submit. Do make sure that you read and submit according to the newspaper's rules if you want to insure publication.

    • 8). Once you have written your engagement announcement and sent it off for print publication, you may choose to publish it in other venues. Again this is a personal decision you and your fiancé will have to make based on your comfort levels and preferences.
