    • Sign the entire family up for a class at a local community college or rec center. Choose something different like fencing, stand-up comedy or -- if the kids are old enough -- defensive driving. Everyone will get to learn something new together, and it will be a novel experience for the kids to see the parents being the students instead of the teachers for a change.

    Appliances

    • Though at first you might not think "kitchen appliances" when you're looking for gifts for children, there are a few small appliances available that are fun for the whole family. Consider a milkshake machine made to look like an old-fashioned soda fountain stirrer, or a popcorn maker that looks and smells like a smaller version of the movie theater machine. Ice cream makers can be fun too, both the hand-cranked and the battery-driven models.

    Outside Games

    • Whether the family in question are athletes or couch potatoes, there are outdoor games that will get them playing together. The parents may remember croquet, badminton or volleyball from their childhoods, while the kids might be able to show the adults a thing or two with a Frisbee golf set or a skateboard ramp. If you buy a gift such as skates, bikes or skateboards, be sure to include helmets and protective padding.

    Karaoke Machine

    • If you're buying a gift for a really outgoing family, consider a karaoke machine. You can be sure it will be used until it's worn out, as they challenge each other to duets, bring it out on every social occasion and serenade everyone who comes by the house. Be warned: You will probably be expected to take a turn on the microphone yourself.
