    • 1). Measure and cut two 3-inch sections from your lumber. These will be the legs for the shelf, and the remaining wood will serve as the shelf itself.

    • 2). Set the two legs on end so that the cut edges are facing up. Place the shelf board on top of the legs. Adjust the legs so that they are flush with the ends of the board.

    • 3). Remove the shelf board. Lay a bead of glue on the top of each leg. Replace the shelf board. Attach the shelf board to the legs with the finishing nails. Use three nails at each end for stability. Wipe away any excess glue that may have squeezed out.

    • 4). Finish the shelf with primer and paint or stain.
