Disney"s Abandoning of Mid-Level Movies and Its Effects on Others

A major shift in Disney's movie policy recently came out.
The company plans on only making blockbusters that have the possibility for toy lines or merchandising, and on making movies that can be made under 30 million dollars.
This policy marks a significant shift in the movie industry that could create significant problems down the road.
The announcement by Disney came as the company cancelled movie plans for sequels such as The Proposal 2 and Wild Hogs 2.
It's a strategy by Disney to try and create a low risk movie market that will help them guarantee profits and cut back on expenses.
However, is this a good idea? The problem with Disney's plan is that it significantly sterilizes the movie industry.
There is no longer room for a mid-budget movie, meaning you have two choices.
Either create a special effect ridden superhero movie, or go indie.
While this might mean the fostering of more indie movies, it leaves a broad opening in the movie playing field.
Whether or not Disney's plan has far reaching effects will come down to how successful the studio's strategy is over the next few years.
If Disney is able to take this policy and be successful with it, it is likely that we will see more studios fall in line and drop their support for these mid-level movies.
While this policy will provide low risk and a decent bottom line, many of those movies being ignored in this policy can be some of the biggest money makers.
The award-winning The Blind Side saw tremendous profits but would likely have been canceled under this policy.
All of these actions raise the question of whether or not a good business decision is a good decision for everyone.
