Methods to Conserve on Energy
- 1). Replace old bulbs with energy-efficient, compact fluorescent bulbs. While they cost a little more than traditional light bulbs, they use 25 percent of the energy of a traditional bulb and last between eight and 12 times longer, according to EcoMall.com.
- 2). Wash clothes in warm or cold water instead of hot, recommends EcoMall.com. An average household doing two loads of laundry per week will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 150 pounds for a gas water heater, and nearly 500 pounds for an electric water heater.
- 3). Clean or replace air filters when recommended. Furnace and air conditioners have to work harder, using more energy when they have to draw air through dirty filters. Cleaning a dirty filter can save five percent on your energy bill each year, according to EcoMall.com. To clean a reusable filter, always turn the furnace off first, remove the filter and clean using either a wet cloth or a hose (after taking the filter outside). Always allow the filter to thoroughly dry before replacing. You should clean or replace the filter at least twice a year.
- 4). Install low flow shower heads; these will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 300 pounds for an electric water heater, or 80 pounds for gas water heaters, says EcoMall.com.
- 5). Install insulation wrap on your water heater. This is inexpensive to buy and can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 1100 pounds for an electric water heater, and 220 pounds for a gas heater. Water heater wraps are fairly easy to install. Line up the wrap with external controls and connections, and wrap the remainder of the water heater, attaching it when fully wrapped. Some wraps have Velcro, and others attach with two-sided tape.
