A little over a decade ago, people were pessimistic about the horror books industry.
The industry was in decline, and even Stephen King was in a lull of his career.
Things were just looking pretty lousy.
Well, in the early 2000's, things started changing.
Now they're surging again, becoming one of the most demanded genres in literature.
Why has horror become so popular in recent years? Well, there's many possible explanations, and while no single explanation can explicitly be claimed to be the sole reason, we can do a little speculation.
First, whether you're Democrat or Republican, we have to admit, George W.
Bush created a lot of problems and a lot of tension.
Many claim 9/11 and the following wars in Afghanistan and Iraq were a large cause of the surge in books popularity and creation.
In other words, many speculate that the political climate during the Bush era was the main (or sole) factor in contributing to the explosion of horror.
Yet Bush is gone now, Obama, a much more popular president, is in the white house.
Sure, the Iraq and Afghanistan wars are still being fought, but as of right now the economy is hitting home in a much stronger way for most folks.
So what do these people do? They see books on the shelves that promise escape and promise to drag them into the deep end of a bizarre and terrifying world where their worries and sorrows will be lost, however temporary of a time.
If Obama and his administration is successful at fixing the economy, the sales may lower a bit.
But let's not forget, this surge in horror also means that the industry has gained many new readers.
New readers means a larger customer base for the industry and for potential new authors hoping to enter the industry.
And we all know that once a reader gets a taste of the most often unappreciated genre, horror, they will not turn back.
