Beading Secrets
- Needle-nose pliers are an essential tool in beading the perfect piece of jewelry. The pliers have a point at the tip, which allows it to easily grab small beads or wire. It is possible to find needle-nose pliers that have a cutting mechanism at the base; use this to cut thin pieces of wire. By purchasing a combination pliers/cutter, you will save money, and it is easier to work quickly on your beading project.
- Keeping your beads and beading supplies organized will help you easily start and stop projects without the hassle of finding all the pieces you need. Separate like colors and similar styles of beads in small plastic containers. Use a larger multi-section bead box if you have several colors and styles of beads to organize. Some boxes allow you to change the size of one area of the box into smaller sections while keeping the other side open for larger supplies, such as pliers, wire or scissors.
- Purchase beads in bulk. This will save you money if you are planning to make more than one piece of beaded jewelry. Bulk beads are available in plastic, glass, pearl or metal. It is more expensive to purchase a bulk container of beads, but the price per bead makes bulk buying a common practice among avid beaders.
- With a bead board, you can line up a string of beads and rearrange the design before stringing the beads onto the wire or string. A bead board has a small grove in it just large enough to hold a single row of beads. Using a bead board allows you to see the whole design of your necklace before you start stringing it. Bead boards also speed the beading process by allowing you to thread your beading needle through several beads at once.
