Disabled Vets Grants
- The Department of Veteran's Affairs is responsible for administering all benefits to which service members are entitled. One of their most important programs, started in 1948, is the adaptive housing grant program. Any veteran considered to have permanent and total disability is eligible to receive a grant of up to $50,000 to build or modify his home to accommodate his disability. In January 2008, the regulations were changed to allow an eligible veteran to use the benefit three times if each occurrence falls within the program limits.
- This program, known as SAH, provides a maximum of $50,000 for the construction of wheelchair access accommodations when required for daily living. These funds may be combined with the regular VA home financing program or the Native American Direct Loan program funds.
- This program, known as SHA, is intended to assist veterans who have lost their sight in both eyes improve their ability to move about their home. It also applies to any veteran who has lost both hands or arms below the elbow. The maximum allowed under this grant is $10,000.
- The TRA program was implemented in recognition that some veterans do not have their own home and live with a relative. It allows a person who would otherwise be eligible for the SAH program a grant of up to $14,000 for temporary modifications. An individual eligible for the SHA program may use $2,000 of the allocation for temporary modifications.
