How Far Can You Cut Your Rhododendrons Back?
- A rhododendron consists of three or more main branches rising from the ground. These main branches form the scaffold of the plant.
- Rejuvenation pruning involves cutting off all three of the main branches at staggered heights as short as 12 inches. New growth will arise to form a new framework for the plant, according to the University of New Hampshire Extension.
- Cut the branches 1/2 to 3/4 inch above a firm, healthy bud. Cutting above a cluster of buds often produces several branches.
- Use drastic pruning methods when shrubs are overgrown or severely diseased. This type of pruning can be done any time of year. Do light pruning in spring, right after the flowers fade.
