How to Play AFL Football

    • 1). Learn the differences between AFL and traditional football. Arena football uses a completely different playing field, and the rules are slightly different than they are in the NFL.

    • 2). Contact the AFL teams you're interested in playing for by email (most teams have a contact form on their website) or phone and ask when they are holding tryouts. Contact information for each team can be found on their websites, which are all listed on the top of the official AFL site. Each team holds their own tryouts, and they are usually during January or February.

    • 3). Familiarize yourself with the teams' current rosters so you'll know who you're up against. The better you are than the existing players, the better your chance of making the team.

    • 4). Prepare yourself by conditioning, working on your running (40 yard) speed, vertical jumping and strength at least four months before your tryout date. If possible, work with a football training coach or former player with professional experience.

    • 5). Purchase the clothing you'll need, including a pair of workout shorts, a shirt to try out in and football cleats. Attire and shoes will not be provided at the tryout, but all other equipment will.

    • 6). Confirm the tryout fee amount with the team at least a week before the tryout date, and ensure you know what forms of payment they accept. Most teams accept cash or money orders, and charge between $25 and $50 per participant.

    • 7). Get to the tryout site at least 30 minutes before start time, especially if you need to fill out your registration form and pay your tryout fee. If you are late to tryouts, you will not be allowed to participate.
