Dress Codes Effect on Students
- Dress codes and school uniforms promote equality in students and prevent ridicule and criticism due to apparel.
- Though dress codes promote equality, they also stifle individuality and self expression among students. According to The Public School Parent's Network, "Self-expression is an important part of child development and some experts believe that curbing it with uniforms can be detrimental to a child."
- According to EducationBug.org, "A case study of the effects of adopting school uniforms in Long Beach, California which appeared in Psychology Today in September, 1999, reported the following effects from the switch to uniforms in 1995: Overall, the crime rate dropped by 91 percent, school suspensions dropped by 90 percent, sex offenses were reduced by 96 percent, incidents of vandalism went down 69%."
- In order to maintain motivation students need to feel comfortable. Uniforms or dress codes are not going to fit into every student's personal comfort level.
- Students fight less and focus more on school when they are dressed in similar attire.
