Tips on Making Painting Easier

Many types of home renovation require more hard work than money.
Painting your home is one of those jobs, whether the interior or exterior, proper preparation is the key to making the job neater, and easier.
It begins days before you get the paint, with preparing the surfaces for the new paint.
On the exterior of your home, you need to scrape or power sand off all old, loose paint.
A smooth, clean surface is needed for a professional looking paint job.
Tap down all exposed nail heads; remove shutters, and all decorative details.
Spread plastic to protect grass and shrubs, and any exposed surfaces such as sidewalks and pathways.
If the gutters and drainpipes are to be painted, sand them down and rinse thoroughly.
Fill in all cracks and repair any damaged surfaces before beginning.
The interior walls and surfaces need to be prepped, as well.
Fill all cracks, and holes, and sand smooth when dry.
Wash all surfaces with a mild solution and rinse, once they are dry, tape off any areas you do not want painted.
Remove electrical covers, grillwork, light fixtures, and decorative details.
Cover floors, and surfaces that cannot be removed, with a plastic drop cloth.
Once the prep is done, you should ensure you have the tools you will need for the job at hand.
A ladder, paint pans, rollers, roller extensions, and paintbrushes designed for the surface to be painted, and for the paint being used.
Quality brushes and rollers may cost more, yet they do will be worth it.
With proper care and cleaning, they can last for years, and pay for themselves in a short time.
Choosing a paint type can be difficult, unless you understand the differences.
For all painting jobs, there are two types to choose from; latex, or alkyd paints.
Although they are both superb paints, they do not work well together.
You can only apply alkyd paints, an oil based paint over latex, which is a water-based paint.
It never works the other way around, unless you first use a primer.
Both types of paint will do a terrific job, the choice comes down to the job, you want them to do.
Latex dries extremely fast and is environmentally friendly.
Alkyd paints are tough, stain resistant, and leaves less brush marks, but dries slowly.
Remember no matter which paint you choose, obtain a high-quality one.
Once again, price matters, using a high-quality paint means the task need only be done every ten years, versus a repaint in five years with a cheap paint.
