Are a Plain Comforter & Patterned Pillow Shams Okay?
- The bed is the single largest piece of furniture in the bedroom. It takes up a vast amount of visual space. For this reason the bed should be treated like the focal point, and the entire room should center around making the bed look lush, elegant, comfortable and inviting for the room, which starts by selecting a color palette for the room. Look for a rug or piece of art with at least five colors that pair well. Bring these colors into wall paint, the rug, drapes, furniture and artwork.
- Look at your bed with fresh eyes. You want to bring each of the five colors to the bedding, but you also want to create a feeling of serenity, which means that your largest surface, the comforter or blanket on top, should be a softer, inviting solid color. It shouldn't match the wall color. Go through the other color options, allowing that you can go lighter or darker with each of the colors in your five colors. Select the color you like the most.
- Bring in the other three colors in two sets of pillows. Make one set a pair of pillows with shams. Make the second set your sleeping pillows. Cover your sleeping pillows with a solid color that is different from your wall or your comforter. Cover your shams with a bolder pattern that uses another of your five colors. Bring the last of the three colors out in a small neck pillow and small accents on the comforter or other pillows.
- Add the wall color in a darker shade, and choose small print for the bed skirt, which will act to ground the bed and make it feel anchored in the room. By creating complex colors, the room will feel personal and it will look more elegant. Follow through with artwork and personal touches around the room to connect the pieces. Change your shams with each season, and bring in a new color to keep your room feeling fresh.
