Uses of Air Hardened Steel
- Air hardened steel is useful in extreme wear situations where it will suffer from many stress and constant impacts, because it is less likely to have internal distortions and faults. Common severe wear uses include brick molds and shot blast liners. It is also useful in the manufacture of garden and construction hand tools, which are constantly subject to heavy impacts and abrasion.
- Air hardened steel is made into punch plates, dies, drills and cutting tools that need to shear or cut other metals such as magnesium and aluminum. This is because the steel does not wear out as easily as the metals it is cutting or impacting, due to its increased hardness and durability.
- Air hardened steel is easier to weld than quenched or oil cooled steel because it was not previously heat-treated. Thus, the weld it produces is easier to keep clean, crack resistant and can be forged later on. This makes it useful steel for tube and sheet welding.
- The surface qualities of air-hardened steel allow it to respond more easily to coating with other materials. It is also more responsive than quenched steel to galvanization, and is used in the manufacture of galvanized tools.
