    Hand-Print Tree

    • A hand-print Christmas tree gets its name from how it's made and is one way to get your family involved in a craft. Different hand prints form the tree's branches. Mix a few drops of green dye into clay and roll it into a flat circle. Take turns pressing hands against the clay and leaving an impression of the hands. Cut the hand shape from the clay while it's still soft. When you twist the top, it creates a rough cone shape, with the fingers hanging loosely at the bottom. Once the clay dries, stack several of the hand-print branches together, starting with the largest at the bottom and adding smaller ones as you go toward the top. A small amount of craft glue holds the pieces in place. Decorate the branches with additional paint to make ornaments and a star at the top.

    Ornaments

    • Craft ornaments from clay and hand paint each one. Roll the clay flat and cut tree shapes with metal cookie cutters. If you can't find a tree-shaped cookie cutter, use a simple round cookie cutter and poke a hole in the top of each one. Bake the clay until it hardens and dries out, and embellish the ornaments with your designs. For the round shapes, paint a tree design onto the ceramic. Use green and red paint to decorate the tree shapes. Tie a piece of ribbon through the top hole of each ornament so you can hang it.

    Molded Trees

    • Make a Christmas tree from clay and a three-dimensional clay mold or slip mold. Pour the liquid clay into the mold and within eight hours, it begins drying. Remove the clay from the mold and use a sharp knife to poke small holes in the ends of each piece. Run the knife along the edges of the clay to remove any uneven or jagged pieces left behind. Fire the clay tree in a kiln, following the directions on the clay. Green and white paint applied to the tree gives it the look of a Christmas tree, complete with snow. Insert plastic bulbs into each hole, which makes the tree look as if it has lights.
