    • 1). Pull by hand any weeds that grow near your cedar tree. Refrain from using herbicides. Weeds, grass and other ornamental plants growing near your cedar take important nutrients from the soil, which can cause your cedar to decline in health. Cedar trees cannot tolerate the use of herbicides near their location. You can use a shovel to remove stubborn weeds.

    • 2). Spread a 3- to 4-inch layer of mulch around your cedar tree and 3 inches from the base of the tree to help lock in moisture.

    • 3). Fertilize your tree a few months after planting with an all-purpose fertilizer that has an NPK amount of 10-10-10. Spread the fertilizer under the drip line or the area underneath the outer branches. Water the tree. Prevent burning the root ball of the plant by not applying the fertilizer near the base of the tree. Fertilize your tree yearly in the spring.

    • 4). Prune your cedar tree in the spring to remove dead, damaged or diseased wood. You can maintain dense foliage by pruning it back in mid-July. Cut out branches that look weak or have little foliage. Remove some of present year's growth, which is green, while old wood is brown.

    • 5). Keep the soil around your tree moist. To know if you need to water your cedar tree, press your fingers into the first 3 inches of top soil. Water dry soil until it is moist down to 3 to 4 inches.
