- One of the most common problems for PCs is the amount of time it takes Windows to load. When you buy your PC, there are only a few files and programs installed on the system. Over time more files and software applications are added. Many are no longer needed. An immediate possible fix is to change the number of applications that automatically open on startup.
The applications can be turned "on and off" by checking the box to the left of the item. Uncheck the ones you don't want, just be careful not to disable any applications you need. If you are unsure of the use for a particular application, write the name down and go to a site called Process Library.com to get the information you need. When you are finish making the changes, you'll need to reboot your computer for the changes to take affect. - If your printer fails to delete old jobs from the queue, or won't stop printing, try turning the power off. It that doesn't work, go to the Start menu. Now delete or cancel any information or jobs in the system. If the problem still persists, you should try reinstalling the drivers for your computer. If you do not have the installation disk, go to the manufacturer and download what you need.
- If you start getting "low virtual memory" messages, the chances are you don't have enough RAM. You may have to close some applications in order to load the program. Generally, virtual memory is created by the operating system when RAM runs out of space. In Windows XP you'll have to manually increase the number of pages used for virtual memory by modifying the virtual memory settings.
In Windows XP go to Start and click My Computer. On the left side of the window, click View system information. Go to Advance tab. In the Performance area, click the Settings button and click the Advance tab. Go to the Virtual Memory area and click the Change button. Now you can change the Initial size and Maximum size to 1 1/2 the amount of RAM on your system. You'll need to reboot your computer.
