    • 1). Sand the surfaces of the door and the wood plank. Use a medium grade sandpaper to remove a prior finish or to sand rough sections. Follow up with a light grade sandpaper to remove scratches. Remove the sanding debris with a damp cloth.

    • 2). Prime and paint or stain an unfinished door, back and front. Primer is not necessary if the door had a previous finish. You can paint over a previously stained surface, after sanding. You cannot stain over a previously painted surface without completely removing the paint. Let the finish dry completely.

    • 3). Finish the 36-inch long by 15-inch wide by 2-inch thick wood board and the two 17-inch long table legs with the same finish as the door. This size wood board is the bench top for a standard 3-foot wide door. Adjust the length of the board as needed to fit the width of your door. Let the finish dry.

    • 4). Attach one decorative L bracket onto each side of the front of the door with wood screws. The flat section of the L should be perpendicular to the door, 17 inches from the bottom of the door. The sides of the L can be flush with the outside edge of the door, or inset 1 to 2 inches from the outside edge onto the face of the door.

    • 5). Attach the two decorative table legs to the underside of the wood panel, one leg in each front corner. Attach the wood panel to the top of the L brackets with wood screws. Stand the door upright to ensure that the hall tree is level. Sand the bottom of the two table legs as needed to level the hall tree.

    • 6). Attach mirror tiles to the center of the top half of the hall tree for added embellishment. Attach three decorative hooks in a vertical row on each side of the mirror tile. Space the hooks evenly. Place the pillows on the bench seat for added comfort.
