Brain Building Exercises

Brain building exercises promotes the longevity of brain cells. These brain cells, called neurons can be kept alive through the connections they have to other neurons. Each neuron can be connected to the others around it through literally thousands of connections.

This is not an exaggeration by any means, the connections can be thirty thousand from one neuron, and these connections carry stimulation to each other keeping them alive. To top it all off, new neurons are created every day throughout our lives and they keep connecting with others.

Brain building exercises are the stimulation that keeps these neurons firing information to each other. Without constant use, your muscles are also basically useless. The capabilities of a person both physically and mentally are tied to what they do, the method they use to do it and how often they do it.

If your brain is only occupied with the same stimuli, over and over with nothing new, then your brain will have difficulty operating outside of this capacity at good levels. The brain is a constantly evolving organ, learning and processing new things all the time. It is not that you cannot deal with other things outside of your typical deal, but you will not be able to function much more than adequately at best, and the goal is always to keep the brain working.

With mental illnesses like Dementia, Alzheimer’s and in some cases, limited or inadequate motor skills as they are also tied to the brain can be improved through brain building exercises. These are not just word games or reasoning and problem solving and so on. It is a fact that cannot be stressed enough; physical exercise affects the mental capacity as well. Adding certain activities to playing games such as chess, word games that require forward planning such as scrabble and so on as well as games like Sudoku are all good mind exercises.

Another key thing is that just like with body building, certain exercises should be added as needed. Playing a word game several times a week, around four times a week is great, but other activities should be added in as well. Make certain you enjoy what you are doing to help yourself mentally, if you are bored, you likely will not stick with it.
