How to Remove Deep Tarnish Spots From Brass
- 1). Apply a quarter-sized amount of brass cleaner to a clean cloth. Rub the cloth over the brass item in a circular motion. Use more cleaner, as needed, to loosen old grime from the item to truly show the area of tarnish.
- 2). Wipe off the cleaner from the brass with a second clean cloth, pulling up the loosened dirt with it. If more dirt still appears, then repeat cleaning and wiping away.
- 3). Look over the item for further signs of tarnish or if all has been removed with just the cleaner. If only a few, detailed spots remain, specifically around knobs or handles, then finish with the cleaner and proceed to Step 4.
- 4). Apply a small bead of ketchup to the end of a cotton swab. Rub the swab over the detailed area to work the ketchup into the crevices. Leave the area to dry before wiping the ketchup off with a third cloth, pulling up the tarnish with it.
- 5). Dab a fourth cloth in olive oil only after you're sure all tarnish has been cleaned away. Rub the olive oil cloth in circular motions over the clean brass to protect the item from future tarnish.
