About unique Christmas gifts

    History

    • The way we celebrate Christmas today is believed to have originated during the Victorian era in the 1860s. Family members would exchange simple gifts to show the love they have to the gift receiver. Over the decades, and due to the commercialisation of the holiday, presents became much more elaborate and expensive. Today it's all about the latest video game and mobile phone. However, if you want to go back to the origins of gift giving, a unique gift can be simple and show how much someone means to you; the receiver knows how much time and effort can go into picking a unique item.

    How gifts are unique

    • There's plenty of gift choice when it comes to Christmas: CDs, DVDs, jewellery, chocolates and video games are all examples of items you can find in your local shopping centre. Unique gifts are items that someone won't be expecting to get and may not be easily found in a shop. They also may mean something significant and special that an ordinary present wouldn't.

    Types

    • Unique gifts can be put into three categories. One-of-a-kind Christmas items cannot be found in shops and are often home-made, for example, hand-made jewellery or home-made cakes. Adopting a wild animal for someone is also a one-of-a-kind gift that may be suitable for animal lovers. The second type is personalised items. A baby's name can be sewn onto a store-bought blanket or a person's name can be hand-painted onto a cup. Unusual experiences, such as indoor skydiving or a hot-air balloon ride, are the final type of unique gift giving; these one-off experiences will be treasured and remembered.

    Benefits

    • There are a few good reasons for giving a unique Christmas gift. First, if a present has been hand-made or personalised, it shows the recipient how much she means to you. It takes little effort to go to a shop and buy a pre-packaged item, but spending your own time on it will be acknowledged. Second, Christmas is expensive since it's a time to buy for all the family. Making your own unique gifts could save you money. Buying raw materials, such as fabrics and thread, for making blankets or pillows will be cheaper than buying a ready-made item. Third, if you're buying a unique gift that the recipient is not expecting, it's sure to be remembered. Getting another pair of socks is easily forgotten, but having a lion adopted for you won't be.

    Considerations

    • Time is a factor you need to consider when thinking of unique Christmas gifts. Since most shops are open until late on Christmas Eve, it's easy to pick up a last-minute gift. You can't do the same if you want to buy or make someone a unique gift. Make sure you plan your unique gifts in plenty of time before 25th December.
