Anyone who's into movies, or who likes making home videos will probably have stacks of DVDs in their home.
Compared to CDs, blank DVD media can provide bigger digital media storage space.
They can also last for a longer time, as long as you know how to properly use it.
DVDs also need to be taken care of properly, so they won't be easily damaged.
First thing's first.
You should know the basic anatomy of a DVD.
A blank DVD consists of two sides, each 0.
66 millimeters thick, that are glued together.
Due to this structure, DVDs can be bent or twisted, therefore being susceptible to damage.
Although a DVD media's error-correction encoding is almost ten times better than regular blank CDs, severe scratches can immediately create occasional problems during playback.
This is due to the higher compression ratio of the blank disks.
DVDs can be fragile, but there are a few good rules which will make it last longer.
Remember that a DVD should be more carefully handled, compared to a CD.
As much as possible, make contact only with the dics's center hole, and the outside.
If you're going to remove the DVD from the DVD jewel case, locate the button on the center of the hub, then push it down lightly.
With your other hand, remove the disc gently by holding its outer edge.
Do not remove the DVD just by prying up its outer edge.
For single-sided DVDs, insert them in the player with the artwork or the DVD label facing upwards.
Before you close the DVD player's tray, make sure the disc is properly seated inside.
When you clean the disc, use a lint-free and non-abrasive cloth.
Dampen it a bit with warm water.
If possible, do not use abrasive and harsh chemicals or cleaning agents.
To wipe the disc, make a straight line from the hole at the center, going to the outer edge.
Do not use a circular motion, or the DVD will only end up with more damage.
Always put your DVDs inside their DVD jewel case.
Here's an important reminder: Never stack your DVD discs without their protective sleeves or jewel cases.
Also, keep the DVD away from places with extreme heat, such as the back window or the trunk of your car.
DVDs will remain useful for a longer time if they're properly cared for.
These are very basic tips, but make sure you follow them!
