How to Select Mattress Sizes

    • 1). Assess your current mattress size. Evaluate how well it works for you and your bedroom. Ask yourself how comfortable you are with the amount of sleeping space and how easily you can move around the bed.

    • 2). Consider the number of people who sleep in the bed. A bed for one person doesn't need as much space as one for a couple. If you have children, consider whether or not they sleep in the bed with you at any time.

    • 3). Factor in the size of the people who will sleep in the bed. As a general rule, you want the mattress about 6 inches longer than the tallest person. Get into the bed, placing your hands behind your head with your elbows out to the side. If you will share the bed with someone, have the other person get into the bed at the same time. Make sure the width of the bed accommodates both of you without elbows touching or hanging off the bed.

    • 4). Measure the room in which the mattress will go. You want at least 22 inches around the mattress to give you enough room to move around it.

    • 5). Measure the hallways and doorways leading to the bedroom. Make sure the size of mattress you choose will fit. This is particularly important in older homes that are smaller or in homes with sharp turns on stairs.

    • 6). Calculate how each size mattress fits into your budget. Larger mattresses generally come with a higher price tag.
