How to Plant Hostas for Gardening

    • 1). Dig up the top 12 inches of soil in the gardening bed. Place the removed soil in a wheelbarrow or on a tarp.

    • 2). Use a pitchfork or gardening fork to smash the soil until it is finely textured.

    • 3). Add a 6-inch layer of compost to the removed soil and blend it well. Shovel the soil back into the planting area, and rake the area until it is smooth and level.

    • 4). Create a planting hole for the hosta that is the same depth as the nursery pot and three times the diameter. Slide the hosta from the pot and place the roots into the hole. Throw in a handful of soil and use your fingers to work it around and between the roots. Fill the hole with soil.

    • 5). Water the soil around the hosta slowly, until the soil is saturated. When the water drains, use your hands to press firmly around the base of the plant. Both the water and the tamping of the soil should remove any air pockets trapped in the soil.

    • 6). Lay down a 3-inch layer of mulch around the hosta. Cover the crown with a 4-inch layer of mulch a week before the first freeze in your area. Remove the mulch in the spring after all danger of frost has passed. Hostas tolerate cold quite well, so this is the only winter it will require protection.
