How to List Employment Breaks on My Resume
- 1). Write a "Summary of Qualifications" as the first section of your resume. According to the Cal Alumni Association, this is a three to eight sentence overview that describes your skills and areas of experience. Include those specific skills you possess that are most relevant to the job you are interested in.
- 2). Split your "Work Experience" section into two or more sections if you performed freelance, contracted or volunteer work during your employment breaks. For example, you may have a "Work Experience" section that includes two previous jobs with a gap, followed by a "Volunteer Experience" section that includes a position you held with a non-profit during that gap time.
- 3). List your previous jobs in order of relevance to the job you are interested in if you do not have any freelance, contracted or volunteer work to fill the gaps. However, most employers see this type of format as proof that you are trying to hide unemployment, so only use it if you have no other options.
