Florida has many flowering bushes in the landscape. These shrubs that flower are nice ways to fill up a landscape with plants that grow tall and wide. A yard that pops with floral color and interesting foliage creates a landscape in which to take pride. For the Florida area, many flowering shrubs are going to be able to grow well. - The French hydrangea, or Hydrangea macrophylla, is a deciduous flowering shrub that has its flower color determined by the soil. Large, ball-like flower clusters can be blue-purple in acidic soil, white-green in neutral and pink in alkaline soil. Leaves are medium or dark green. It grows 3 to 6 feet high and 3 to 6 feet wide. It requires loose and moist well-drained soil with partial shade to sun conditions. Propagate a French hydrangea by cuttings. It's hardy in USDA Hardiness Zone 6 through 10.
- The crown of thorns, or Euphorbia milii, is a drought-tolerant bush with bright-green, leathery leaves and yellow-green flowers with two bracts, or specialized leaves. Bracts can be red, yellow, pink, orange or white. It grows 3 feet high and 2 feet wide. It requires full sun and sandy well-drained soil. It tolerates partial shade, salty soil and salt spray. Propagate a crown of thorns by cuttings. It's hardy in USDA Hardiness Zones 8 through 11.
- The gardenia, or Gardenia augusta, is a fragrant evergreen with dark or bright-green leaves. It grows 6 to 8 feet high and 6 to 8 feet wide with leathery leaves and white flowers that age to cream-yellow. Fragrant blooms show from mid-spring to summer. It requires acidic, moist soil with partial shade or sun. Propagate a gardenia by cuttings. It is hardy USDA Hardiness Zones 8 through 10.
- The Chinese hibiscus, or Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, is a mallow family plant that attracts butterflies and hummingbirds. The leaves are toothed and dark green, while its bell-like flowers vary in color. It grows 15 feet tall. It requires well-drained, fertile, lightly acidic soil with sun or partial shade. Propagate a Chinese hibiscus by cuttings or grafting. Hardiness ranges from USDA zones 9 through 10.
