The simplest way to get referrals as a house cleaner is to ask happy clients at the right moment, make it easy for them to pass your name on, and thank them every time it works. Many clients who love their cleaner never refer anyone, not because they don't want to, but because nobody asked and they don't have your details handy.
Referrals matter more in cleaning than in most businesses because clients let you into their home. A friend's recommendation answers the trust question before you've even met. Here's a system you can run in a few minutes a week.
When to ask
Timing matters more than wording. Ask when the client has just felt the value of your work:
- Right after a compliment. "The house looks amazing" is your cue.
- After the third or fourth recurring visit. They've seen you're reliable, not just good once.
- After a big job. A move-out, a deep clean before guests, or a clean before a new baby.
- When they leave a review. Someone who writes a review is already telling people about you.
Avoid asking on a visit where something went wrong, even if you fixed it.
What to say: three scripts
In person, after a compliment
Thank you, that means a lot. I'm taking on a couple of new clients this month. If you know anyone who'd like help, I'd love it if you passed my name on.
By text, after a few regular visits
Hi [name], thank you for having me these past few months! I have a couple of openings on [days] in your area. If a friend or neighbor has been wanting help, feel free to share my number. It would mean a lot.
After a review
Thank you so much for the review, [name]! If anyone ever asks you about a cleaner, I'd be grateful if you sent them my way.
Notice what these have in common: they're short, they give a reason (openings in their area), and they don't pressure.
Make passing you on effortless
People forget names. Give them something to hand over:
- A referral card left on the counter after a clean, with your name, number, service area and a line like "Recommended by a neighbor." Leave two: one to keep and one to give.
- A contact card on their phone. Text them your contact card once so your details are in their phone when a friend asks.
- A short shareable message. Send them a sentence they can forward: "My cleaner is [name], they're great, here's the number: [number]."
Should you offer a reward?
A thank-you reward is common, but it's optional. If you offer one, keep it simple and something you can afford on every referral:
- A discount on their next clean once the new client has booked and paid.
- A free add-on, like inside the fridge or oven, on their next visit.
- A small handwritten thank-you card, which costs almost nothing and is remembered.
Put the reward in writing on your referral card so there's no confusion, and only give it after the new client's first paid clean.
Neighbors are your easiest referrals
If you already clean on a street, the houses around it are your cheapest new clients: no extra drive time, and your client is already a local reference. After a clean, leave door hangers on a few nearby houses, and mention it in your text to the client: "I'll be in the neighborhood every other Tuesday if anyone nearby needs help."
Track who sent you work
When a new inquiry arrives, ask: "How did you hear about me?" Write the answer in your lead tracker or client list next to the new client. After a few months, you'll know which clients send you work (thank them properly) and whether referrals, door hangers or social posts actually bring jobs. Then do more of what works. Our guide on how to keep track of cleaning clients shows a simple sheet for this.
Common mistakes
- Asking once and never again. Clients' friends need help at different times. A light ask every few months is fine.
- Forgetting to thank. Thank the referrer the day the new client books, not weeks later.
- Overpromising rewards. Only offer what you can give on every single referral.
Start this week
Pick three of your happiest regular clients and send the text script this week. Order a small batch of referral cards or print your own. If you want this done for you, Get More Clients includes referral cards, door hangers, a lead tracker to see which channel brings jobs, and 30 days of ready posts, in about 15 minutes a day.
