How to Remove Boat Graphics
- 1). Use a hair dryer to heat the lettering on vinyl graphics. Vinyl is the most common type of lettering or numbering on modern boats of all types. It is easy to remove with heat and light scraping. Be careful with fiberglass boats because too much heat will also melt the gel coat. If you do damage the gel, however, it is easy to repair. Lift a corner of the graphic as it heats up. Slowly peel it away from the boat. Use a plastic putty scraper to nudge the graphics along if they stick. Be careful not to gouge fiberglass or scratch metal boat material with the plastic putty scraper.
- 2). Apply an even mix of nail polish remover and water to fiberglass, metal or wood surfaces where vinyl graphic adhesives remain on the surface. Rub off gently.
- 3). Polish the area on a fiberglass boat where lettering can cause fading with the surrounding area. Wax and buff to the original shine.
- 4). Remove painted graphics from fiberglass or metal, with oven cleaner. Spray a light film of oven cleaner over the lettering. Let it set for an hour. Wipe away. Polish and wax fiberglass finishes.
- 5). Apply a coat of paint remover to wood boat surfaces with painted letters. Wipe off and use a fine sandpaper to remove remaining graphics. Blend the sanded area with the untouched surrounding finish. Reapply wood sealant over the sanded area. Paint a thin layer of varnish.
