- Making your own masquerade mask for dress up, Halloween or a special party is simple. These are also popular around Mardi Gras. You'll need card stock you can put through a computer printer, white glue, wooden chopsticks, and any embellishments you wish to have. Print out a masquerade mask template (see References), and then cut it out. Paint or color your mask any way you wish, then glue on any embellishments, such as glitter, sequins, feathers, beads or jewels. Glue a dowel to the back center of the mask, and allow to dry.
- Children will enjoy making this simple masquerade mask that is affordable to create and perfect for the Mardi Gras season. Purchase some yellow, green and purple card stock or construction paper. Gather together white glue, scissors, a black marker and a craft stick. Draw a mask outline on the yellow piece of paper with the black marker. Cut it out. Then, trace your child's handprints on the green paper. Repeat on the purple. Glue the green handprints to the outer sides of the mask so the fingers point outward. Layer the purple hands atop the green ones, gluing them so the fingers point upward. Outline everything in black marker to bring definition to it, and then glue on the stick to the left side of the mask for a handle.
- For a more advanced project, create a paper mache masquerade mask. Make a paper mache mixture (see References), and purchase a cheap plastic or cardboard mask from a party store. Cut any shapes or embellishments out of poster paper, then fasten them to the party store mask with masking tape. Cover the mask with newspaper strips dipped in the paper mache mixture. There should be four to six layers on the mask, front and back. Allow to dry for at least a few days and then paint and hot glue on any fancy decorations.
- Have fun with multiple masks by making them part of a party invitation for your guests. Purchase plastic masks at your local party store---one for each guest. At a craft store, pick up some velvet (enough to cover all the masks), gold rick rack and a wooden dowel (one for each mask). Hot glue the velvet to the front of the mask, and cut to size. Glue on the rick rack to make a gold border around the outside of the mask, as well as the eyes. Attach the wooden dowel to the back right side of the mask. Write your party information on a piece of paper or poster board and glue it to the backside of the mask. Hand out your unique invitations and encourage guests to wear their masks to the party.
