Depression is a very dark illness, you can't possibly understand the feeling, until you're dealing with it. Though depression is serious and can be unsettling, it can be completely treated using medicine, therapy and some natural remedies. But no medicine can be as effective as the support of a loved one. No one has survived depression without acknowleding the role the support of loved ones played in their overcoming depression.

 Research and Learn as Much as you can about Depression

Knowledge will give you wisdom. The better you understand the disease, the better you'll be able to deal with it. When someone is depressed, they're not themselves, they'll act in ways you've never known them to, but if you understand the illness, it signs, symptoms and skills for helping someone with depression, you'll be able to cope when the person is suffering from an episode.

Always show that you understand

Depression usually affect the sufferer's personality, so the person may likely become rude and easily agitated. To control this person's attitude you have to choose your words carefully. Try to understand this person's condition and act accordingly, ask yourself, does he or she behave like this before the depression? Most likely not, so see this person as they once were and talk to them with understanding of their condition.  You want to make sure you help them understand their condition is not their doing, and so you don't blame for their actions.

Remind them at all times of your love and support

 A depressed person will most likely feel unworthy of your love.This is because this person has forgotten their good qualities, so remind them and tell them why they do deserve to be loved and not just by you. Solidify their lost hope again using something you know they will believe in. What does this person believe in more than anything?

Offer them your help

Though you can't possibly understand how they feel, but let them know that you're ready to do whatever you can to help them. The sooner they start their treatment the better for them, so take it upon yourself to gather the necessary information on the treament options available, and offer it to them to read through and make a choice which one they want to go for. Let it be their decision to get treatment, except when they are becoming suidial then you need to get professional help immediately.

Look after yourself

Depression is a darkness that can not only turn the life of the sufferer upside down but also those close to them. It can be a great burden taking care of someone depressed, so know when to take a break and attend to your own life, if you don't you could end up needing someone to help you too. It's important you help a depressed person, but don't give up living in the process.
