How to Propagate Tri-Color Sage
- 1). Fill a 4- to 6-inch pot with a peat-based commercial potting soil. Spray the potting soil until damp. Set the pot aside while you prepare the cutting.
- 2). Use pruning shears or a sharp knife to cut a 3- to 4-inch stem tip from a healthy tri-color sage plant.
- 3). Strip the leaves from the bottom half of the stem. Place about 1 tbsp. of powdered rooting hormone on a piece of waxed paper. Dip the bottom inch of the stem in the powder and plant the stem into the center of the pot. Discard any excess rooting hormone.
- 4). Cover the pot with a clear plastic bag. Seal the bag securely with a twist tie or rubber band.
- 5). Place the pot in low light. If possible, place the pot on top of a refrigerator or another warm appliance to aid in root development. Check the pot every day and mist inside the bag if the soil dries.
- 6). Watch for roots to appear in three to six weeks. To check for roots, remove the cutting from the soil with a table knife, then replace the cutting immediately.
- 7). Plant the tri-color sage in a sunny, well-drained place outdoors when the roots are at least 2 inches long. Alternatively, leave the sage indoors until spring. Place the plant in a sunny window. Water only when the soil feels dry to the touch.
