Some holsters enable gun owners to carry a concealed firearm for self-defense situations.. Choosing the correct holster reduces the time needed to draw and provides more comfort when carrying a concealed firearm. Ankle holsters have many advantages over back, belt and other types of holsters, including superior discretion, comfort and safety. From a seated position, drawing from an ankle holster is a superior defense solution, making it a top choice for concealed weapons while in a vehicle or in social situations. - The main advantage of ankle holsters is the level of discretion provided for carrying a firearm. Holsters can be designed to fit the the top or the bottom of the ankle smoothly, matching the physical characteristics of the lower leg. Wearing boots over the ankle holster can conceal the firearm further, helping to avoid telltale bumps that suggest a hidden weapon.
- Wearing an ankle holster also affords the ability to draw discreetly by pretending to scratch an itch or adjust shoes or socks. When the bottom half of the body is hidden from view, the firearm can be lifted closer to waiting hands without conspicuous movement of the upper body. Drawing from ankle holsters is safer than rear holsters, preventing the user from employing a sweeping motion during the draw. Ankle holsters have the advantage of being the easiest draw when sitting. This is a particularly attractive option for vehicular defense when seated behind the wheel. Ankle holsters provide excellent backup for a primary firearm, especially when there is no time to reload. When firing is the best option from a standing position, crouching to access the backup weapon presents a smaller target when under fire.
- An armed society may be a polite society, but that does not mean that most social situations are catered to carrying a visible firearm. Ankle holsters blend in well for situations where wearing back, shirt and external holsters are undesirable. Restrictive or formal clothing make it difficult to wear belt, back and upper body holsters, giving ankle holsters the advantage for social situations such as fancy dinners, banquets or business meetings. During spells of hot weather, wearing a holster on the ankle is a cooler option than adding another layer of clothing on your midsection or upper body. Ankle holsters are much more comfortable than other holsters in situations where the user is sitting for long periods of time, preventing the firearm from prodding the back or side of the body. They are also less likely to result in a dropped firearm when running or performing other strenuous activities.
