How to Flush a Volvo Penta Boat Motor
- 1). Connect a garden hose to a water spigot.
- 2). Look at the starboard rear side of the engine--the engine's right side, as it's mounted in the boat--and locate a hose that's clamped there, identifiable by a blue cap over its end and the "running engine flush" symbol, which resembles a water spigot above a stylized representation of a motor. Take the blue plastic cap off the end of the hose, called the "engine flushing port", to expose the flush connector.
- 3). Screw the end of the garden hose into the flush connector. Turn the water spigot on, full force.
- 4). Start the engine and allow it to idle until its temperature finally climbs into normal operating range; the thermostat won't open to allow fresh water to circulate through the engine until it reaches this temperature. Let the motor continue to run for at least ten minutes.
- 5). Shut the motor down when it's flushed out. Turn off the spigot, disconnect the garden hose from the motor and replace the blue cap on the engine flushing port.
