Instructions on Installing Hollow Wall Anchors
- Anchors are used to hold things on your wall when there is no stud or when it is not preferable to use one. Wall anchors come in several types, for light and heavy decorations. Plastic wall anchors are used for light objects such as slight decorations and light pictures. Hollow wall anchors, sometimes called molly bolts, are for medium-weight frames and pictures. Toggle bolts are used for large objects such as heavy pictures and wood shelves. All three systems expand behind the wall to hold the screws inside them in place, but the heavy-duty anchors expand further and are made of stronger material.
- Installing hollow wall or other anchors is fairly simple. For a hollow wall anchor, you want to predrill a hole that is just a bit less wide than the thickest part of the anchor, making sure the hole goes all the way through. Put the anchor in the hole. You will need to use a hammer to knock it all the way in. Make sure you hit it head-on and don't knock it sideways. If the anchor does not stay perfectly in place, use the end of a screwdriver or other tool to hold it there. Screw it in with a separate screwdriver until it is almost all the way in. It might be harder at first to screw in until the back opens up.
