    • 1). Water your hibiscus once every week when rainfall is less than 1 inch. Hibiscus need 1 inch of water every week, either provided by rainfall or supplemental watering to keep the soil evenly moistened and promote abundant blooming. Water the hibiscus deeply and thoroughly to moisten the soil down to and around the roots.

    • 2). Fertilize your hibiscus once every two weeks from spring until fall while the shrub is actively growing. Apply a water-soluble fertilizer made for blooming shrubs, following the dosage and application instructions on the label.

    • 3). Pinch off the faded flowers on your hibiscus while it's blooming before the blossoms form seed heads. Removing the spent flowers will encourage re-blooming during the season.

    • 4). Prune your hibiscus while it's actively growing to control its shape and growth. You can prune any undesirably long branches back to right above a side shoot that has productive buds or blooms. Prune any broken or non-blooming shoots back to the main stem.

    • 5). Protect your hibiscus from the cold in winter when temperatures are below 40 degrees Fahrenheit or when a light freeze is possible. Cover the hibiscus with a light blanket during the night and remove it in the morning when temperatures warm up. If you have a potted hibiscus, simply move it indoors during cold weather.
