When Google unveiled their new Universal search system in May this year, it changed a lot of things.
For searchers, it changed the results on the search results page.
Now it would include news, video, images, book verticals etc in one result page.
For webmasters, it changed their traditional perspective towards search engine optimization.
While a website was optimized for Google in the earlier days, now it has to be optimized for Google universal search.
So how is SEO for Google universal search different from the more conventional one? There are some significant changes that need to come in.
Optimizing for video, office files, the metadata tags etc are some of these changes.
Let us look at each of them in detail.
Google Video If you search for a video file on Google today with precise file name, say georgebush.
avi, there are chances that you will come across a few results that are relevant while the rest will be 'bush video' , 'George bush' etc.
This is because; Google uses the Title field that lies in the properties Meta Data.
So your number one criteria should be to look into each one of the metadata tags and improvise them by including a solid keyword, a subject and a meaningful title.
The more precise you get, the better your chances of landing an accurate inbound link to your website.
Office Files The above mentioned principle also applies for office files.
Now you will see a lot more office files being included into the search results.
Now this might just pose as a challenge of sorts for webmasters because most webmasters have never paid enough attention to the optimization of office files.
Once again, the title field is the key here.
If you are using office files in your website but have not really paid any attention to the metadata tags, then it is time that you visited the menu item + file properties section and improved on your metadata.
