What Are Panic Attacks, Can They Be Avoided?
The American Psychiatric Association defines the physical symptoms of a panic attack as: * Heart palpitations * Profuse sweating * Trembling * Difficulty breathing and swallowing * Chest or stomach pain * Nausea or vomiting * Dizziness * Hot flashes or cold chills What are panic attacks and can they be avoided? At least 4 of the above symptoms must be present for at least 10 minutes in order for a person to be experiencing a panic attack.
Panic and anxiety disorders are, most recently, being linked to heredity, brain chemical imbalances and life occurrences.
Situations that may cause a panic attack can range from side effects of certain medications or stimulants such as caffeine to stressful situations, or for no apparent reason at all.
Avoiding panic attacks may take the form of professional counseling to formulate a treatment plan to change thought processes, learning breathing and relaxation techniques, and changing unhealthy habits, or a combination of any and all of these actions.
In addition to changing these behaviors, there is a strong possibility that certain medications may be able to help such as Paxil, Wellbutrin, or Zoloft just to name a few.
Medication should only ever be considered as a last resort, its not good on your body to take medication for something that can easily be treated naturally.
Consideration must also be given to beginning an exercise program, herbal remedies, prayer, vitamins and finding ways to improving your self-esteem.
Keep in mind, however, that there will be setbacks.
Bad habits are hard to break and learning new and improved habits is hard to do.
Some days will be better than others, but staying on track to healing will make those bad days fewer and far between.
