Ideas to Increase Tithing

    Post the Need

    • Provide regular financial information to the congregation. Add the information to the bulletin or church newsletter. Include the amount of contributions, the amount of money required to meet expenses and the amount of surplus or deficit each week.

If contributions do not meet the budget, provide information on the minimum amount needed each week, based on average attendance. Ask congregants to contribute the tithe, or the minimum amount per person, each Sunday.

    Cutting Expenses

    • Notify the congregation of the cuts that may be necessary if the budget expenses aren't met. Identify programs, personnel and other line items that may be dropped if additions are not made to the weekly contributions. Estimate the average weekly income if all church members tithed and display that amount against the actual contributions.

Give people the choice to consistently tithe or experience budget cuts. Provide information about which cuts could occur first and how quickly changes must be made.

    Tithing Challenge

    • In Malachi 3:10, God challenges believers to put Him to the test where tithing is concerned. This is the only passage in the Bible where God does this. The promise is that the tither's needs will be met with an abundant supply greater than the individual's ability to take in.

Teach a tithing class on the value of tithing. Consider using a prepared tithing curriculum such as Larry Burkett's "Giving and Tithing," "Tithing: Test Me in This" by Douglas Leblanc or Mary Morrissey's "Prosperity Plus." Challenge class attendees to faithfully tithe time, talent and treasure for at least 13 weeks and report the results. Offer a class refund if God fails to provide.

    Alternate Giving Options

    • Provide various ways for members to tithe. Set up electronic giving with automatic bank account withdrawals, online giving through a service such as PayPal or self-addressed envelopes church members can drop in the mail. Encourage members to establish a consistent pattern of tithing until it becomes second nature.

Send electronic statements once each quarter so members can see what they have contributed and compare the statement to their paychecks or bank accounts. Provide reminders about alternate ways to contribute.
