    Women's Costumes

    • 1). Mimic the look of a typical teen girl from the 1980s. Cut the neck of an old, brightly colored sweatshirt so that it is large enough to hang off of one shoulder. Wear a pair of acid-washed denim jeans, or bright leggings with high-top tennis shoes. Tie the look together by teasing your hair and using hairspray to make a frizzy hairdo. Apply bright lipstick, and blush and eyeshadow in a bold color.

    • 2). Transform into an '80s aerobic instructor. Wear tight leggings with a brightly colored leotard, or a large shirt gathered at the side and secured with a rubber band. Place sweat bands on both wrists and leg warmers over the leggings on each calf. Style your hair by placing a sweat band in the front to hold hair out of your face and gather the rest into a high ponytail on the side of your head.

    • 3). Portray an iconic '90s pop sensation by mimicking the look of a Spice Girl. Select the band member that you'd like to dress as. Find a wig in the same color as the girl's hair and style it accordingly. Baby Spice was known for blonde pigtails, while Sporty Spice was recognized for her tightly wound dark curls. Select clothing in the style of the Spice Girl you'll be portraying and carry around a microphone while in costume.

    • 4). Remind people of a 90's scandal by dressing as Monica Lewinski. Wear a brown wig, or style long brown hair in a fashion that frames your face. Wear a bright blue dress with red lipstick and carry a cigar throughout the night to make it clear who you are dressed as.

    Men's Costumes

    • 1). Bring back the '80s stud. Wear tight jeans that are slightly short, paired with a white t-shirt and acid-washed denim jacket. Sport colorfully rimmed sunglasses and fingerless gloves as accessories. Complete the outfit with a pair of heavy black leather boots. Style long hair by teasing and spraying in place, or wear a mullet wig.

    • 2). Sing your way in with the ladies while you dress as a '90s boy band member. Ideally, this costume should be worn in a group, with one member portraying each character. Dress in khaki pants and a button-down shirt to play the sensitive member. Wear dark colors and sunglasses with a thin, fake beard to act as the bad-boy member. Place fake earrings in both ears and use stick-on studs for facial piercings as the eclectic member. Style everyone's hair in a popular '90s style like spikes, bleached tips or dreadlocks.

    • 3). Take advantage of warm party settings to recreate Tom Cruise's iconic character from "Risky Business." Wear a white t-shirt with a pair of plain boxer shorts and white tube socks pulled all of the way up. Use your hand as a microphone and take every opportunity to slide into rooms and dancing.

    • 4). Bring back grunge by wearing an oversize flannel shirt over a white ribbed tank top. Rip holes in the flannel to maximize the look and pair with baggy, dirty jeans. Strive to make your appearance one of not showering for a few days by greasing up your hair in a messy style or wearing a plain beanie.
