    • 1). Locate the spark plug wire by looking at the back middle of the motor for the white porcelain part of the spark plug. Put on safety glasses. Feel along the wire plugged onto the top of the spark plug and trace it to its other end that plugs into the coil. Do the same for each spark plug and coil if there is more than one.

    • 2). Check for broken insulation along the wire, slightly bending it as you go, and where the spark plug wire plugs into the spark plug connector cap. Do the same for the end that plugs into the coil. Check each spark plug and coil if there is more than one.

    • 3). Replace the bad spark plug wire(s) with a new one by plugging one end of a new spark plug wire into the connector cap on the spark plug and the other end into the coil. Make sure the new wire, or wires, makes a good connection on each end.

    • 4). Repair the bad or broken spot in the wire temporarily, if a new replacement wire is not available, by wrapping electrical tape around any broken insulation. Make the tape repair a little larger than the original wire insulation. Do the same for each spark plug wire that has broken insulation.

    • 5). Square off any damaged ends with electrician's pliers if necessary. Plug one end of the taped wire, or wires, into the connector cap on the spark plug and the other end into the coil. Make sure the wire, or wires, makes a good connection on each end. Replace the taped wires with new wires as soon as possible.
